DTG uses water-based inks that soak into the fibres of the garment rather than sitting thickly on top. This is what gives DTG its soft, breathable feel. However, it also means durability is closely linked to fabric choice, ink curing and how the garment is cared for after printing.
If inks are properly cured and the garment is washed at lower temperatures, DTG prints tend to fade gradually rather than failing suddenly.

What Is the Best Fabric for DTG Printing?

100 percent cotton is widely considered the best option. Cotton absorbs water-based inks effectively, producing strong colour, fine detail and the longest-lasting results. Ring-spun and combed cottons perform particularly well due to their smoother surface.
Cotton blends can still be printed using DTG, but results vary depending on how much polyester is present. Higher cotton ratios usually hold ink better, while higher polyester content can lead to slightly duller colours and faster fading.
Polyester and synthetic fabrics are not ideal for standard DTG printing. Ink absorption is poor, which often results in reduced vibrancy and lower wash resistance. In these cases, alternative print methods are usually more suitable.

DTG is not the most hard-wearing print method available, but it excels in other areas.
DTF and screen printing generally last longer under heavy washing because the design forms a bonded layer on top of the fabric. However, these methods come with trade-offs such as a heavier feel or higher setup costs.
DTG stands out for its ability to reproduce complex artwork, photographs and full-colour designs with a soft, premium finish. It is especially effective for sampling, small runs and brands that value detail and comfort over maximum industrial durability.
How to Make DTG Prints Last Longer
With sensible care, the lifespan of DTG garments can be significantly extended.
Washing inside out, using cooler wash cycles and avoiding tumble drying all help reduce friction and heat damage. Mild detergents are preferable, and ironing should be avoided directly over the printed area. These small habits make a noticeable difference over time.
Is DTG Durable Enough for Your Brand?
DTG printing is durable enough for most fashion, promotional and brand merchandise when used appropriately. It is particularly well suited to garments that prioritise design detail, softness and flexibility over extreme wash resistance.
